CAF (Chang'an Ford Automobile Co.,Ltd) announced that they recalled Kuga (Escape in North America) which produced between September 21st, 2012 and November 13th, 2013, on February 21st, 2014. The total amount was 80,857.
However, half a year has passed. The problem of broken steering shaft remains unsolved. On one hand, broken of steering shaft also exists in other series of Kuga which are not recalled. On the other hand, the accident happens in other cars manufactured by CAF including Ecosport, Focus and Mondeo (Fusion in North America). Consumers doubt that broken of steering shaft has become weakness of CAF.
CAF said that the materials of steering shaft on recalled Kugas did not conform to global materials strength standards carried out by Ford. Steering shaft may be broken if the car was hit strongly. CAF would change the steering shaft of recalled cars for free in case of accidents.
Incidence of breaking steering shaft has decreased after using new materials. However, broken of steering shaft still happens in cars which manufactured after November 13th, 2013, the same to those Kuga whose steering shaft has been changed.
It is estimated that accidents have happened in Hangzhou, Yongan, Shantou, etc. Two accidents have happened in May.
